SIHH 2019 brought a wide collection of modern, gorgeous and out-of-this-world watch design. IWC's Big Pilot series was also reinvented and IWC launched two 3-hand pilot's watches under the Spitfire sub-range: Steel and Bronze. In the beginning, it was rumored that the new designs will just be re-iterations of Mark XVIII. If the size and strap feel a bit much for you, it’s worth considering the Spitfire Automatic, which is sized at 39mm and is offered on more traditional strap options. The Spitfire also uses the same 32110 movement and is based on the same design language found in the Top Gun so unless you need the black case, you’ll find a lot to love there.

The matte stainless-steel case with its narrow, steep bezel and massive screw-in back has a moderate diameter of 39 mm and is therefore one mm smaller than the case of the Mark XVIII. The height is 10.86 mm, which gives it a sporty look and is also an appropriate thickness for a classic pilots’ watch. It’s 39mm across by 10.8mm tall. This continues the downsizing trend of IWC’s core pilot’s watches — the recent Mark XVIII is 40mm, which is great, but I think the 39mm here is perfect. It’s such a wearable, versatile size, and it adds a nice vintage touch (without being the 36mm of the original).
The 39mm case diameter and the modest size of the crown make it a comfortable watch on the wrist. Although the Mark XVIII is 40mm, previous Marks were in 36mm, 38mm and 39mm. The Spitfire takes it one step back from the Mark XVIII and is in 39mm.
